On previous trips to the Lake District we have never really looked for walks that involved elevation gain. Being two unfit individuals we have always opted for lakeside walks but on our last trip we got a taste for it with views over Coniston Water.
We opted for Rannerdale Knotts as the elevation gain seemed reasonable. The climb was a good mix of grassy path and rocky terrain, and the glimpses of the view in store for us at the top, spurred us on. It was well worth effort giving us a fantastic view spanning Buttermere, Crummock Water, Loweswater and out to the Solway Firth.
The national trust page for the walk can be found here
On the way back to the cottage we decided to try the Honister Pass. This was a terrible mistake, the road surface was probably the worst we have experienced in the Lake District and it was at this point the more comfortable Golf GTI was appreciated over the Civic Type R we have brought previously.
